Any idea of the ability of Sql Replication? We are considering having a copy of a single database running in four separate areas with updates over night using SQL replication. The data entered in the four separate areas do not overlap but each of the areas may want to see the data in the other areas occassionally (hence the replication to have a full database in each area). Does anyone have replication working now? Does anyone have any comments regarding what we are considering?

Thanks for all replies!

HI

I am trying to do same thing. I did snapshot replication. But its depend which replication you want. Remember if it configure well then its ok otherwise many problems. Right now i have plan to remove replication because It take more time than if you make backup and restore in other place. 2. If your database is big then it will stuck in between and no user can do any thing until your replication done.
I posted several time questions about replication but no body answer it...i don't know why....?
If you want replication...first try on any sample database like pubs or northwind etc...then do on live....

I think that I will have a problem with replication based upon your comments. I will have my four separate SQL servers running on four different subnets across satellite conections with a 640 msec delay for the hops. I am limited in bandwidth as well - maximum of 128K per hop.

I was really hoping it was as efficient as File Replication or Active Directory.

Since you don't get much of a response to this type of post I guess the SQL replication is better suited for other types of replication than what we have in mind.

Thanks

Hi ,

Im doing replication (transactional and Snapshot) but is time consuming like SQLBaby said, I don't recommend any replication if you have a low bandwidth. You will have lock tables everywhere until replication finished.

Just wanted to give my opinion.
good luck

In your sitation, i will not sugest you to do replication. You know i already disabled replication and now trying to remove this but i can't... it takes time and my database is live 24/7...evry time when i tried to remove every one stuck and all the phones starts to ring from all user even accros the country. I am now waiting any luck time when i can remove replication.

As you told you have different SQL server then i will not sugest you at all. May be you can do repliction setup easily but after errors you can not remove it easily.

You can play with Pubs or Nortwind DBs as i told you..but when you have primery and foreign keys in you tables (Live DB) then you have much problems.....Its up to you....

I have already written off replication for my needs. I will run one instance of the database and use Metaframe Xp for connetivity......slower than running locally but apt to have less headaches.

Thanks for the posts guys.
