SQL 2000 Maintenance Plan Qestion

I want to create a maintenance plan using SQL 2000 Maintenance Plan Wizard. My Question is when I select the box "Reorganize data and index pages" do I have to have the database offline? Also I was told to run the "Update statistics used by query optimizer" seperately and to uncheck auto update on the database properties. Is this true?
