Hi there
I have been given the task to scope out a new machine to run sql 2000 in our environment. We run an inventory program from 5 remote sites, we never have more than 50 users connected at once and most arent working the software too hard, (most are idleing at the main menu).
The software currently runs on Unix usin C-ISAM, I am just wondering if I need to think about dual processors for this environment, I talked to a salesman and he was very insistent that without a dual processor we wouldn't be able to function at our full potential. I am a little sceptical due to our rather low amount of users and what they are doing in the software.
I hope this is enought information and it makes sense, I have experience with sql 7 but 2000 would be new to me (although I'm not sure it is very different).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dual processors at a min, and at least 2 gig of memory. Raid 10 for OS and trans logs and RAID 5 for database files

I agree with timscronin but would push the memory to 3 gigs. I'm a firm believer in get as much Ram as you can afford. Also for the data drives go with smaller faster drives. My experience is that while people will say the 72 gig drives are as fast as 36 gig drives when put under a load they don't preform as well.
