We are suppose to install SQL 2000 SP4 on our SQL server per software company request. When I search online, I found that there are a lot of bugs in SQL 2000 SP4. Even from Microsoft web site, there an article titled "A list of the bugs that are fixed in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4". It listed about 100+ fix there.

Do I have to go through all those bugs to get SQL 2000 SP4 installed? Is there a easy way to get SQL 2000 SP4 on the database server? Currently, we are using SQL 2000 SP1 on Windows 2003 server. Thanks.

Your post is confusing. If I read it correctly you think the "A list of the bugs that are fixed in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4" means there are bugs in SP4. That is backwards. SP4 fixes bugs in SQL Server 2K. All be it bugs is a general term and "bugs" does not mean it is a functional issue.

Short answer it is not good practice to not stay current and it's odd you are not on SP4 now. You should always be proactive in applying patches and security updates to anything. Typically you will have a development or UAT environment running you can test these on of course prior to slamming them in your production environment.

Actually I'm not expecting a reply back sense I see you have never replied back to a thread you have started so in short your answer is, "You need to pay closer attention to the articles you read and what they are telling you" and "You need to keep current with your updates on SQL Server"

Thanks onpnt.

Since we are currenly using SQL 2000 SP1, do we need to upgrade SP2, SP3, then SP4? Or can we upgrade SP4 from SP1? Please advice. Thanks again.

Service packs are cumulative. This means that SP4 has SP1, 2, and 3 embedded within it.

You do NOT have to install SP2 or SP3. You can simply install SP4.
