SPS 2003 & Windows Server R2

I have tried in vain several times to get SPS up and running on 2003 server R2. First of all it does not create the App Pool during insstallation. After manually creating it and having the Admin site use that pool I get authentication issues. Has anyone successfully installed SPS 2003 on an R2 system?
