We have started converting desktops to Star Office 6.0 to replace old Office 97 installations. Have discovered a problem where if a Star Office user opens and changes data in a spreadsheet, an Office user is locked out of some functions, like adding new columns, when opening the sheet later.

The user trying to add columns is the originator of the spreadsheet, which was created using Office 2000.

Any ideas?

Make sure the setings in Tools options Load/save are set to always save as Microsoft word 97,2000, xp for spreadsheet and text documents

That's a given and we do that. I double checked to make sure that this particular PC was set that way, but didn't make any difference.

Also have problems if a document was password protected in Word, I can't open it with StarOffice. Doesn't even ask me for the password. Conversely, I can't password protect a document in Star Office and save it as a Word document type. That's a BIG hole in compatibility.

We're currently working on "converting" a large number of documents because Star Office won't open/display/print them the same as they were with Word.

There are a bunch of compability issues remaining outstanding in my view.
