Yes, but I've heard you do not want to have any open flame near sprachg-et-fuhl <grin> (and if I truly had any sprachgefuhl, I probably wouldn't have hit the [Submit Post] button on this.

I've developed a bad case of Ortographobia since I've started posting here.

At least you got ortographobia right. :)

I am continually impressed by the complex meanings conveyed by single words in the German Language.

2 previous favourites of mine include:
Schadenfreude - satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune

Treppenwitz - Wittism of the Staircase. (You know, the one you should have said but were too slow on the comeback)
Only Wiki references found so no link provided.

And my personal favorite:Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, "Danube steamship company captain."

I am just ROFLing along in this thread...

Santa, remember it is the silent ones that are deadly!!!

and sprachgefuhl actually should be written as sprachgefühl or sprachgefuehl, but in English they tend to replace the Ü with a banal U... changes the whole meaning of the word...

I still remember the days where Schifffahrt (3 f's (new spelling)) was written as Schiffahrt (2 f's (old spelling)), which actually means the whole maritime ship logistics, and that Schiffsfahrt means travel of ONE ship or ON one ship...

kwb,

"I am continually impressed by the complex meanings conveyed by single words in the German Language."

and I am more or less astounded by the English language, in that when there isn't a word to describe something, it gets borrowed from another language...

e.g. gesundheit, kindergarten, doppelganger, zeitgeist, angst...

or the use of acronyms to describe things (probably more to do with the military slang than anything else though)...

e.g. fubar, snafu...

Having served in the Army, I can tell you that your two examples DEFINITELY apply to the military. [army]

P5, I did notice that...

btw. putting poison ivy (or the Plant Urtica dioica) on ones tongue, can lead to the symptoms that you are experiencing, e.g. pronouncing the 's' as an 'f'...

or one should not post after having visited the dentist, besides dripping while drinking water it also could be cause of the above symptoms...
