I have installed a LaserJet 2015 printer on my network. Server is running Open Server 6. Printer prints fine from Windows systems, UNIX jobs spooled to it never print, remain in spooler forever. I can telnet to the printer (telnet xx.xx.xx.xx 9100) from either Windows or UNIX and it responds. Anything I type in a telnet connection will be printed. I have several printers on JetDirect servers and with built-in JetDirects working fine. This model replaced the 2300 I'd used before, of which I have several working. If I configure a 2300 with this printer's IP, the spooler works on the 2300. Looking at the web page from the 2015, LPD is checked as an available protocol.

The same thing happens with an Epson TM-220B with built-in Ethernet. Works from Windows, works from telnet to port 9100, ignored by the spooler.

Can anyone tell me why does the spooler ignore the printers?

This is a known issue of the integrated JetDirect of the 2015 to NOT accept hpnp jobs.
Two workarounds:
1) either buy an external JetDirect 175x (J6035C)
2) or use netcat instead of hpnp

Hope This Helps, PH.

I've renamed /etc/getone to get the HP 2015 to print from SCO 5.0.7, perhaps the same will work for you.

From what I've read, using netcat is much preferred. I don't use it because my company thinks it would become one more thing to maintain. I think people just don't want to learn sometimes.

The netcat utility worked great. I set up a netcat printer model so installing a spooler printer with netcat is the same as installing any printer, with the exception of a manual edit of the printer file in

/usr/spool/lp/admins/lp/interfaces

to put in the IP address and if necessary, the port number.
