I get the above message when trying to print.
I've rebooted numerous times and it hasn't fixed itself. I've started the print spooler service manaully and it errors out immediately. This problem just started today.
Thanks
OK, I ran the cleanspl.exe utility and now the printer services start and run. When I plug in the printer(USB) the computer wouldn't react. So I deleted the USB portion in the device mgr. and rebooted to reinstall. After reboot they plug and played installed. Now the computer does try and install the printer when I connect the USB cable. But I get an error saying [Specific port unknown].
So I guess I'm still having some USB issues.
Thanks for your replies,
Also, When I try to add a network printer via TCP/IP I don't have a [Standard TCP/IP Port]. I assume the cleanspl program "cleaned" it. How would I go about getting it back?
Thanks for you help. But after doing the above, the standard TCP port still doesn't show up. And the USB printer still wont install (error saying [Specific port unknown]).
If using Service Pack 2, remove (uninstall) the USB Root Hubs shown in Device Manager and restart the computer. XP's new Hardware Wizard will identify and rebuild the ports.
TCP/IP Ports
Start, Printers and Faxes, File, Server Properties, Ports, and add the ports to the machines list of defined ports.
You can use the native WSH scripting feature to do this:
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, use the iconic Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, and install "Simple TCP/IP services"
After a reset, check again the scripting links I provided above.
USB
The sequence here is important. If I remember correctly, the HP printer cannot be connected to your machine until prompted to do so by the HP printer driver installer. Remove the printer definition, unplug the printer, and try again.
