One of my users has Windows 98 on her computers, she also has a Lexmark Z51 printer installed on the computer. Every once and awhile when she goes to print she will get the following error:
Spool32 caused a general protection fault in module <unknown>
She then will have to restart her computer becuase all the printers have disappeared. She does have some other printers on her machine as well. The spool error only happens when she goes to print to the lexmark. Any one havee any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance.

Here's one suggestion. This is interesting because the normal recommendation for trouble shooting spool32 errors is to set the format to raw.

I don't know if setting to emf will lead to spool32 errors on the other printers.

Microsoft findfast and osa are two tsrs that can cause spool32 errors for some folks.

Another approach that I've seen recommended (and have not been allowed to try so I cant tell you if it works from personal experience) is to replace the win98 spool file with the winme spool file. There is some kind of issue with ms update if this is done, you have to juggle the two files back and forth to call out for updates. I can try to find the HP thread discussing this if you want it.

(And just to eliminate the possibility of corrupted files you could delete the printer port in the control panel and let windows redect it on reboot and remove the printer and reinstall it from the original cd.)
On HP printers, another suggestion is to install just the basic driver/inf file rather than the complete toolbox of stuff.
Another setting to look at is the bios setting for the port, I think there's stuff like eccp, emp, and so on. I cant remember what's the recommended change when there's a problem, you could make notes on what you have now and experiment with different settings and see if it helps.

If the lexmark is sharing a port with the other printers through a switch box, any of these changes have the possibility of being counter productive ie solving the problem for the lexmark and creating it for the others.
( I HATE SPOOL#@ errors.!!!! )
