Splitting/breaking away from a domain

My problem is this:

Currently, my company is sharing a domain with 2 other companies (we were all one company a few months ago but are now going through an ugly divorce). We do not have possession of the IIS, PDC or the firewall (although we do have a BDC in house). Our dilemma is whether we should split from the domain retaining the current domain name (we would have sole "rights" to the name)or recreate the domain structure from scratch with a new name.

What is the best approach and where do I begin planning this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

HI.

You can promote the BDC to PDC after disconnecting from the original PDC and the other network.

But for security reasons, you might wish to rebuild the domain by reinstalling a new or same PDC - because some people from the other company know passwords and other data.
If you don't, then you will need to delete obsolute accounts and to change passwords for the other.
If you do rebuild from scratch, you might have problems recreating user accounts and transfering all original user profiles to the new user profiles from the rebuilt domain.
So you should first do some pilot and lab practice unless you know the procedures.
