Hello all,

My company uses a Nortel system for phone service. We have an office that is split with 2 people. How do i split the phone jack line so they are both able to get a phone hooked up. Currently only 1 user has a phone. Is there anyway I can split the RJ11 jack? I really don't know Nortel systems. any help would be greatly appreciated.

What type of phone?

If Analog, yes, if digital or IP no.

Analog I believe. Uses RJ11. Meridian phones. If it was IP i could just put a switch to it.

If analog just "daisy chain" to the correct pairs in the wiring closet or jack and then put a splitter oon the line.

If Digital then Copy the set to a new TN, Wire it to the spare pair in the jack and put a splitter on it.

IP - dont have a clue.

You can buy a splitter 1 & 3 or 1 & 4 or just rewire the jack yourself with another insert. Just put the org, grn, or brn pairs on 4 & 5 (blue) of the one you add and punch down the TNB to that pair on the mdf.

If it is a digital phone on standard U.S. wiring, it typically uses the blue pair (center pair) for CAT 3 wiring. If you want to add another phone, you can lift the green pair (or orange or brown) off the jack and punch it on to a new jack on the blue pair. Then at the PBX end wire your TN to the green pair of the same cable making sure white goes to white and solid goes to solid colors. Then all you need to do is program the phone to that TN. You can reuse the same number if you want or add a new number. Analog is basically the same. If IP you will need a whole new connection to it. You cannot use the same TN/wire pair for two digital phones.

This is the current Nortel system I have. Compact ICS with a Callpilot 100. the phones you are using are the m7310. I am using cat5 wiring and you need to know which are the unused wires that you are able to use.

it doesnt matter which system and which phones you are using in this case. Sometimes it does but what you need to do is look at your MDF first, there you will see the stations punched down and hopefully labelled. It's probably a smaller office and if you are lucky they home ran each jack to the MDF. You will need to punch down an available port to the orange white pair of each jack you are trying to split, then purchase and install one of the splitters BigIndian suggested. You will plug that into the jack at the desk which will then make that 1 jack a 2 port jack. Plug a phone into each one and it should work.

This is assuming you do have available ports (extensions). You cannot have 2 phones on the same extension.
