I used Access 2000 to split a database into front end and back end. Then I created converted a copy of the front end database for use on Access 97. When I tried to open that copy (on another computer running Access 97), it didn't recognize the back end database format. I converted it to "previous version of Access" and now it opens. The front end copies reside on workstations while the back end db is on a server.

My problems is extreme slowness. It literally takes 5 minutes to do filter or open a form - That's if I'm lucky and it doesn't freeze everything up and cause me to restart. Everything I'm reading on the net says it should be markedly faster, not slower. I have no VB code, just forms, queries, reports and tables.

It's much better when only one person at a time is accessing the database, but my whole intent was for multiple people to be able to do data entry at the same time. Have I done something wrong or do I have to set permissions or something?

I'm having trouble finding anything about it in the help files either. It just tells you to use the Database Splitter wizard, but it doesn't say what to do after that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

having set up this only in ver 8 (97), with out any dramma.

without workgroups or permisions shouldn't be an issue. although i have had problems with converted 97 apps running on 2000 but mostly with methods etc not compatible and
Date() not working!

now, you will get "slightly" slower performance using a file server for the back-end and so forth but this is not that much slower depends on network traffic how busy the server is etc.

2000 database structure is different to ver 8, can you try putting a copy of the back-end db on the machine with access 97 re link it and see if there are problems with the backend? maybe run repair/compact on the db file!

have all the table index's been restored?
how is the network setup!

see ya
RobertD
