I have just gotten a router and tools I need to set up my network. I have run all the neccessary cables from one room to the other. But one of the rooms need has two jacks that need to be connected to the router in the other room. I have only run one cable between the rooms. Can I split the Cat5 cable from one jack and run it to the other jack, or should I run a separate cable from the router to the second jack?

Thanks,
C. Smith

for what you are describing splitting the cable will work just fine

I did the same thing here we had a cable running to my office then my wife wanted to do internnet from the bedroom

use the orange and the green pairs on the first jack then on the second jack punch down blue where orange pair would go and brown where green pair would go

You would be WAY better off to just put a cheap switch at the end and NOT mess up a perfectly good cable drop.

I realize it is less important in a house than a business, but you STILL do not want to explain to the wife that because you used the cable incorrectly, now you have to run more cables to repair that mistake.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Or just put a hub or switch at that 1 connection in the room, to split it into multiple connections.

Radio Shack sells a Y splitter. I carry one with my laptop just in case. I have used in the field with out any problems.

I think that a small minihub will work the best for you. You wont mess your cable up and minihubs are cheap now days.

If you find any mistakes, please consider that they are there for a purpose. And everyone needs a purpose.
