Split Mode tag

I am looking for an explanation for the function of a splitmode tag in my code which is <SplitMode Value="HOME_LOCATION_SPLIT"/> I used the search engine on the W3 site to no avail which leads me to the desire of just having a library of tags and how they function. Let me know the purpose of this tag. Thank you in advance.

I'm confused - XML doesn't define any tags itself (well, not quite true); you define your own tags designed specifically for your needs.
