Hi All,
We have a customer who wants us to pull back about 40m of BT fibre on their site. The fibre is currently in one comms room but they want to pull it back and re-use it in another comms room. It is not possible to leave it connected in the tray while it is pulled back. We have a Fujikura 60s which is capable of splicing SM and MM fibre. All we need to do is cut the end off with enough on it to then re splice when it is in the correct location. Is BT fibre Single Mode? I have looked time and time again on these fibre cables and there's never anything on them to ID them. Is this a task any of you have done? We've installed and splice high volume of cables that we have supplied but never a BT one.
Regards
Mark

Is it tube? BT use a big white thick tube, feels like a garden hose
If it's tube i'd avoid at all costs
I have moved and extended the purple stuff however, that's easy enough usually just singlemode from what i've seen

Hi,
Thanks for responding. Yes it's blown fibre. The tube actually passes through the room where they now want it, so I was just thinking we could pull the fibre, not all the tube back to there and splice the end back on.

suppose you could!, I was in a situation where it was getting pulled out and relocated into a portakabin, we ended up just running a cat6 cable from the end point of the fibre to our kit in the new location and boxed it in

Thanks Yellow,
I am pretty sure our machine will do it because I have seen BT engineers using the same model. I’m just a bit twitchy as it’s not something we’ve done before.
Regards
Mark.

BT sometimes use single mode and sometimes multi mode.
It partly depends on the length of the run and when they were installed.
Can the network guys not tell from the transceiver on the end of the cable?

Hi All,
Just wanted to update this post.
It worked!!
BT Blown fibre is single mode and our fusion splicer spliced it no problem. The job came together well, everything worked when the IT boys plugged their kit back in. Client happy and I was very very happy.

The only problems you will run into doing this is BT's support. Their demarcation point is the NTE - everything up to the NTE is supported and maintained by BT. If you muck around with it then you have broken your agreement with BT.
I have run into this issue several times with BT refusing to connect their equipment over customer installed and certified fibre. They just won't do it. You tell them where you want the NTE installed and they provide everything up to the NTE. They warrant and maintain the connection to their NTE. If you do anything on their side then any SLAs you have on the service are null and void.
If you want it moved you are supposed to tell them and they will move it. If you do it yourself then you are on your own.

As pedantic as it may seem BT are very black & white on this.

Along the same lines...

I had a service call, twice, wanting me to relocate the Telco drop 20 feet away. I told them the equipment belongs to Telco and, by law, I am not allowed to do ANYTHING with their equipment. I also collected the $$$ for a Service Call each time.
