Splash screen handling

I am trying to handle the splash screen properly. Now when I build a application from Alphs Anywhere to PhoneGap, the images under ~\PhoneGapProjects\Default\ will be used for the splash screen. Would you please tell me how PhoneGap use those images to different devices such as iPhone, iPad? What I found is that the dimension of the image actually change the screen size of the application, is it wired?
