I have a customer with a Merlin 308. I know it's a dinosour but still serves as a great home system for this residence. I recently swapped out the unit after a lightning hit. I got all programming back except for when you go off hook it grabs an analog line and you hear a beep beep tone and then dial tone. All works, just annoying to them. I have a manual , so my question is dose anyone know what this is called, or why it would beep?

Go off hook at the D- Marc with a buttset and check there. It sounds to me like they have phone company Voicemail on the line and they are hearing the tone the phone company sends.

Thanks for the reply. But its not vm tone, I heard it and its definetly the spirit system giving the tone.

could be a bad replacement KSU

Spirit hasn't been around for quite a while so the replacement you got has obviously been around

I would go back to whoever you got it from

the other thing you could try is initializing it to see if maybe that helps but my money is on a "wipe clean " refurb

Still, test the lines at the point where they plug into the control unit's CO port. There could be something connected between the MPOE and the control unit that is causing the beeping when going off hook.

Lines sound clean going into the system. Everything else is working fine. It seems like this is a feature that has been turned on accidently by the customer. The customer and I agree that the noise was not present when I swapped the cabinet but started sometime after.

have you tried initializing it ?

Spirits and Merlins are a dime a dozen on eBay. The Spirit SU is ok but the sets are a piece of junk. For basic cheap multiline service Merlin is just fine.

I still love the "modern" look of the Merlin. I think the design and the ring tones are a real classic. If you listen to most movies you will hear the Merlin ring in the background if the scene is in an office setting... even todays movies still use the Merlin ring. And you will still often see their phone sets in the movie.

Any know what a Dimension 2000 PBX was???

I have not tried intializing. I thought I would get a quick response here from a tech that used to install theese all the time and pass that info on to the customer.

I love when you hear the merlin ring then see a Nortel phone on the desk.

The Dimension 2000 PBX was a phone system that had the KSU in the main attendant phone. It was a 25 pair system around in the early 80s.

The Dimension PBX series was made by Western Electric in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The 2000 was one of the series. They were electronic PBXs not a Key Telephone system. There was NO KSU. The PBXs supported the MET sets that were used on the Horizon system. These were pre-divestiture systems. The Dimension was sort of a predecessor to the Definity of today.

....JIM....

The very first system I programmed was a D2000 for the State of Ohio MVD - had to be in the late 70's...
The system w/ the 25 pair and the intelligence in one of the phones was the ComKey 416 - I remember selling them as so "advanced" - geez I'm getting old...
