In what way can I measure system spikes and unususal loads on my system? is there a utility I can run, or some files that can be checked. I'm on a E$%) and running Solaris 2.6/
Solaris 2.7.
 
there are lot of tools available in solaris,
you can try with some commands like

sar, iostat, netstat...
diffinetely you will get the response

Have a look at the vmstat command; it will give you a reasonable idea of how heavily loaded your system is.

if you have CDE ... /usr/dt/bin/sdtprocess ?

real time display of all current ins and outs ... (but not specific processes)
