Hiya, I know this one has been answered before but what is the latest on Spell-checkers free and paid for. I don't want to pay the earth for a simple and workable checker and don't need anything more than something that will check and suggests replacement words, that's it.

Also, has anyone here made one and how long did it take?

Thanks
Allen

I dont think that making the spell checker itself is the problem. In its simplist form you are picking out the waords wrom between the spaces and comparing them to list.

Rather how do you obtain a list of correct words a dictionary file.
I know such things exist, but are they in a format we can use in a Delphi Programm (ASCII I suppose) and are any freeware?
Steve.

Getting "English.dic" files from the net is never a problem and you can find with over 200,000 words in them. You're right that it wouldn't be too hard to look at each word in the memo box and look in the English.dic file to see if there is a match, and if not somehow highlight that word. With a bit of work it should be Ok, but I have a Rich Text memo, and that is the first problem - basic spellers won't work as they will pick up the RTF codes. 2nd would be the problem of intelligently look for sound alike words and present a list to the user, delphi is not too kind in this area. Unfortunately, I am not yet at the full-on component making stage, as I would design something which is very usable and just about free! I'm shocked that I find spell-checkers costing about $100 or more USD and being in Australia that isn't good news with out conversion rate...

Cheers

Thanks folks!

After an exhaustive search on the Net, found Orcka free suite of components - for Delphi 5 upwards. WOW, the visual spellchecker is free to use in any way as long as you don't alter the source code. I am impressed! Slotted in no probs and uses the files I wanted to use english.dic and custom.dic (can specify others).

Thankyou Orcka

What is the URL for this suite? Cheers,
Nico
