Hello,
I put the spelling 'abc' icon on my custom tool bar.
If I display a record from the database in a form, the Spelling icon is enabled and will check the text fields
when clicked. However, if I am inserting a new record in the database via a form, the spelling icon is disabled and is unclickable. Do you know why? Thanks

Maybe the new entry on the form is not yet saved to the table (a dirty record).

The Dirty state of the record should make no difference; it's the first thing I thought to check. And if the icon is grayed out I suspect that DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSpelling won't work either. I've been chewing on this for 24 hours now and still don't have a clue.

Hi There,
Did a little test.
I'm using access 2003 and I don't seem to have that problem. If I click the spelling checker in a new record, the spelling checkers starts doing his work and the button is enabled. It starts from record #1 if that record wasn't spell checked before.

Thanks to all for your replys. I did try the DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSpelling and I got an error staing it was not available at this time. I think the problem has to do with the way the system is set up. Because of the sensitivity of information and the way the system flows, I have separate forms for updating and one for inserting. The difference between the two is the Allow Edits switch being turned on or off for the respected form. I tried a test where I allow edits on the insert form, and the spell checked was enabled. Thanks

That seems logical. Since a spellcheck can/wants to perform changes on the data.
