Some of my users are having a problem w/spellcheck in MS Word: They begin in English (U.S.) but in the middle the default language changes to French. Afterwards the language must be reset to English inside Word before the user can finish. I've reviewed the documents: they contained no French words at all (not even French-origin English words). I can't find any commonalities between either the docs or the users.

We run Windows NT & Citrix + Word XP (2002). Spanish & French modules are installed but default language = English U.S.; "detect language automatically" = on; network normal.dot is locked so no user can modify it. We can't disable French for individual users; all Word defaults are uniform network-wide.

I found some archived threads ( thread68-919307, thread68-812442 ), but no one had an explanation. It's not a fatal problem but it's irritating and confuses those who experience it. Thanks for any ideas.

Okay, just so you don't feel alone. I had the exact same problem about 2 years ago using Office 2000. It is very frustrating. I wish I could remember the solution. I think I found useful information by searching the Word MVP sites. All I can give you is the comfort of knowing you are not alone on this.

I believe somewhere along the line text may have been pasted from other doucments. Best bet may be to Select All, apply Language setting and then spell check.
