Speed of Restore/Merges

Hey All,

Does anyone know what determines the speed at which merges or restores run?

I have an ATLP7000 tape Library using Arcserve 2000.
When I do my merges or restores, the speeds vary dramatically sometimes.

I will start a merge for a particular session, and it will merge at a rate of 15MB/Minute, then i will do a merge of all sessions, and it will go at 400MB/Minute.

Any ideas on this?
