Hi there,

My cable modem download speed had consistently been between 1000 kbps and 1200 kbps

This weekend I installed Norton Personal Firewall on my PC (Windows 2000).... now my speed is around 750 kbps... quite a decrease. I expected some decrease but not a 35 % drop.

(There is not a hardware firewall and no routers involved in my configuration)

Just wondering if this is typical - Has anyone else experienced a significant decrease in speed after installing a software-based firewall?

Tahnks, John

John,

I would look at how you have Norton configured. The overhead imposed by the firewall should be negligible. Try shutting off the firewall and running the speed test to ensure you do not have an underlying condition being masked by the firewall.

If the connection speeds go back to normal, go to and run their Tweak Test on the Tools page. It usually helps quite a bit when conditions occur.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your suggestions, The Old Man

The problem seems to have gone away. For 2 weeks now, I have consistently been downloading at speeds of 100 or 1200.

I like it when a problem resolves itself.
