Hi. We're currently running 1gig ethernet to most devices. What speed increase for backups might I expect by moving those system to 10G? ( presuming the backup software and hardware can fully utilize the LAN connection )

Thanks

Paul

In the wildly unlikely event that the backup software and hardware can fully utilize the LAN connection, (or even that the HDs being backed up could keep up with 10GE) you would get a 10 times speed up from 1 gig. (this presumes that you are even able to fill 1 gig pipe with your backup hardware, which I doubt)

As an example, if you have the speed of 8 WD VelociRaptors, that might fill up 10GE, if you did not run into SATA bus or PCIe bus issues

Not that it matters, but 10 GE is actually 9.953 Gbit/s

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

After I posted this I priced Gig hardware. $4K for a single port. JUST A BIT out of range for us. :] I'd thought the hardware was down to perhaps twice what Gig costs. oops.

Unless the current gig pipes are almost full I doubt you will see any difference .

An easier way to increase your bandwidth would be to use additional interfaces at both ends of your Core-Backup link and configure LACP or etherchannel to bundle additional 1Gb links together with your existing 1Gb link.

Your existing topology will determine whether this is possible.
Monitoring of your backup devices' ethernet links would be the pre-requisite to tell you whether you even need to worry about bandwidth.
