Specifying Optional Tray Source

We use an HP 9040DN printer for printing invoices. The invoices are sent to the printer via raw PCL. The paper trays are selected in the PCL. Tray 1 is selected for the first page of the invoice, which is a colored page with the company logo. Tray 3 is selected to print the remaining pages. The problem we are having is this. When Tray 1 is empty, we want the printer to switch to the optional source Tray 2, which also contains the colored company logo first page. Is there any way to link trays 1 and 2 or another way to do this?

Instead of selecting media source by combination of PaperSize and PaperTray identifiers, select by combination of PaperSize and PaperType.

PaperType can be specified via the 'Alphanumeric ID' sequence; e.g.:

{esc}&n6WdPlain
{esc}&n11WdLetterhead

You obviously also need to set the paper type associated with each tray via the printer front panel menus, or equivalent (Embedded Web Server, etc.).

If you have two (or more) trays with the same Paper Type, they'll be used as a 'cluster'.

I suspect that the higher numbered tray(s) will probably be used first, so this may not quite fit your requirement of "use tray 1 first".

Thank you very much! This information helped to resolved my issue.
