I have a Gateway workstation that I need speakers hooked up to. I have tried 3 different sets of speakers and am unable to get any of them to work.
I set up speakers on 20 other workstations (not Gateways) and had no problem. The Gateway station has 3 colored slots for plug-ins...all of which I have tried.
The sound is on max in the control panel...
I'm lost here....

Hi

Check that the sound is not muted as this will override any volume control setting.
The green audio socket is usually the output one for speakers, and the speakers themselves have a volume control that will have an effect on whatever the Windows volume is set as.
If this still doesn't work, I would connect a set of headphones up and see if you can hear anything from these, and if there is still a problem, check that the sound driver is installed properly (ie no problems in device manager etc).

What playback sources do you have on the sound card, and how is each set in terms of mute and volume? How are you testing the sound?

Sound to me, no pun intended, that you have onboard sound. Sometimes audio is turned off in the bios so you need to enter the bios when the machine is just starting to boot, usually you hit delete, sometimes its F1, but it will say on the bottom left of your screen when you boot up.

Then go into bios and enable onboard sound if its not enabled. If you have onboard sound then for sure you will have a place in bios to enable/disable sound so that you can use a different sound card, so just make sure its enabled and then save and exit the bios and boot up and try it out.
