Got a strange situation. Installed W7. It picked up the speakers but not the microphone. This is an HP DC7600.

What I've done so far

Tried looking on the HP website but all it came up with is a program called driver whiz which crashes when attempting to detect drivers.

Plugged the mike into line in (worked on the machine at work but that was XP) but still not picking up anything. It is now plugged into the mike port in front.

Under the microphone, Skype says that there is no sound card but sounds do come out.

Any ideas on how I can get the mike going?

Have you tried the Windows Vista Audio driver from HP's site:

Since its part of the audio card it should include the mic driver there.

Also what does the Win 7 Audio control panel have to say about it?

Any Exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Have you installed the Motherboards driver set? You can try the Vista drives also.

Also I've often had issue with frontal audio ports. Make sure everything is correctly connected to the MB first. If all else fails try the Mic port on the back if there is one.

That's what strange: there are no exclamation marks in the device manager. I tried the Vista thing earlier - didn't work. Just had sound but no mike.

Anyway, I noticed that before device whizz crashed, it found something called Realtek Audio HD.

I decided to download the RealTek driver and install it. Lo and behold, the mike started working.

What do you see when you right-click on the Volume Icon in the Notification Area and select Recording Devices? Make sure (by right-clicking anywhere in the resulting window) that you can also see both Disabled and Not Connected devices. Is you Microphone listed in that window, and if it is, is it ticked as being the Default Microphone? Also if you highlight any listed Microphone there is a Properties button (next the the Default button) with more settings you could check.

Does this Microphone have a sliding Mute or Off button on the stem?

Before using the Realtek driver, it didn't show any missing devices. It didn't show any Microphones. Under recording devices, it just said None. There weren't any Microphones on the Mixer dialog.

After installing Realtek, it is OK. There is only one recording device. The microphone has a sliding mute and an off button.
