I have a Norstar system with version 5 software. A user complains that the when using speakerphone, the connection is staticy and crackling. On the handset the connection seems fine. Replacing the set with a brand new one did not seem to change the symptoms or complaint. Any ideas? I think this is a two wire system, so loose or broken wires would cause the same symptoms on the handset.

the handsfree is half duplex meaning it works like a walkie talkie in that either you can transmit or receive but you can't do both at the same time. This prevents feedback. the circutry detects noise in the room with the phone and switches to transmit. Sooo your handsfree phone won't really work in an enviroment that has lots of background noise ie busy road outside window, airconditioner in same room, typing on keyboard beside phone. This may or may not be part of the problem. - Other thing is ground on the telephone system make sure there is a good 3d wire ground. Check with a multimeter there should not be more than a few ohms between neutral and the third prong ground. and/or get sparky in to check the building ground. I think I remember something about bad grounds and handsfree........[ponder]

NORSTAR® TELEPHONE VOICE DISTORTION
In certain rare circumstances Norstar® terminals manufactured after March 8,1999 may have distortion of voice. This scenario can occur when a user talks loudly into the handset or when using the Page feature. This issue does not affect the 7410. If you get a report of distorted voice quality when speaking through the handset then follow the steps below to correct it. This condition is corrected on sets manufactured after April 30 1999.
