I have rebuilt an old compaq to some usefulness albeit slow. Of the last few problems, one is a humming or just loud noise in the speakers when turned on. Affects bith speakers. took some work getting them to work but I think I 've got the right drivers now. any help / advice is appreciated.

Try wiggling the bayonett and see if it comes and goes. Sounds like a weak ground at the plug or sockett. You might want to check and see if your getting any feed back off the MIC because the volume on the MIC is set high. It's worth a shot. GL

1. what's a bayonet
2. I noticed wiring implying a mic - but where is it - is it built in?
3. I am using a dial control on the monitor to control speaker volume - does this control mic instead and maybe this isn't speaker controls?

Thanks for helping out

I take it your monitor has three separate cables connecting it up...? Firstly for mains power, second for video (15-pin "D" plug), and third a cable for the speaker connection. Is that right? Also, confirm that the soundcard is working ok and that you can hear music, sound, etc., despite the hum.

Can you try plugging a separate stand-alone set of speakers into the soundcard output? Do these hum as well? You say you have installed drivers for the soundcard - usually this software will include some sort of software mixer/level control, i.e. a programme you can bring up on the screen to control volume levels. What happens when you adjust this?

If you still have hum in the monitor speakers, it suggests either a bad earth somewhere, lack of screening, or a fault inside the monitor. As said previously, a good test is trying a separate set of speakers if you can...

Good luck!
