check the the MODE SELECT on the back of the SCSI CDROM. 2 small pins should be installed in slot #2 and slot #3 which should = " Target 6 " by default

The diagram ON_TOP of the CDROM dislpays numbers such as ID1, ID2, ID4, etc. i.e. id2 and id4 = target 6 ( default )

Next time you boot the following small diagnostic to see if your drive comes back as target 6, takes a few minute and may see as if th systems has shutdown ( runs best when system is power-cycled )

After you check this out and change your settings back and power-cycled the sparc5 again back to your normal setting.

try to " boot cdrom " again with the following at a root prompt.

shutdown -g 0 -i 0 -y ( hit enter key ) set-defaults ( hit enter key ) boot cdrom ( hit enter )

If all goes well then you will hear the software cranking and ready to load

In refence to you thinking it's a hard disk problem... I doubt that very much.

Unless your disk has been fried, SUN Solaris is a Master at hard disk recognition and will without question prompt you to reformat a disk it not recognize within it boundary/setting
