I've been thrown into a network to try and solve a problem...

The network is built around Cisco 3750G, using VLANs.

The problem is that when a mobile workstation is connected via a Linksys 5 port switch (EZXS55w), the 3750G shuts down that port.

I'm told that this is due to the spanning tree updates.

does this sound to be the case?
Would using a hub instead of the switch cure it?
does spanning tree need to be disabled

Sorry - I'm not a network techie, where should I be looking next?

thanks for any help.

I would suggest you look at the following:

Spanning-Tree BPDU guard
Spanning-Tree BPDU Filter
Spanning-Tree LoopGuard
Spanning-Tree PortFast
Port-Security

If the port is shutting down I would think that this is by design. When BPDU Guard, BPDU Filter, LoopGuard etc are enabled it is generally to protect the network from people plugging in extra switches without informing the IT dept.

Whatever you do DON'T disable spanning-tree without first understanding the implications - you could easily bring the whole network down.
