I'm about to hook up a stonegate firewall up to a 3550 switch. I want to hook up redundant links (2 links, same subnet). Will spanning tree block one of the ports even if it the links go to a 3rd party device? Or is STP used only between Cisco devices?

Spanning tree should do the job. Its not just a cisco thing. If it was, the whole world would be in a fit of rage over loops. :)

Nawlej's answer is partially right. Spanning Tree is compatible with other devices if you are using common spanning tree 802.1d If you start to implement Per-Vlan spanning tree then it is Cisco proprietary. I think my explanation will help you figure out which version is right for you.
