Span tapes in Netbackup?

I have netbackup 5.1 setup with a stand alone ait3 tape drive. I run a backup job too big to fit on 1 tape. the job fails from no available media after filling tape 1. I don't have a tape robot. Why will netbackup not wait for new media?
Must i use a tape robot?
Is there a setting that it thinks my standalone drive is a tape robot?
