SPAN - how to make vertical scroll bar without horizontal

I have a SPAN - I want it to have only vertical scroll bar without horizontal.
I added - OVERFLOW: scroll; to my span but it has both vertical and horizontal scroll bar. How to get rid of horizontal scroll bar.
