I have an Exchange 5.5 server running on a Windows 2000 Server. I also have a Fedora Core 4 box running a mySQL database and that is about it. I would like to setup the Fedora Core box so it would filter the email coming into my domain before it hits my Exchange server. I have been reading around and know that it is possible to do but can not find a good white paper on how to do it. Is there anyone here that has had success with implementing something like this and can give me some help?

You are seeking to build an email gateway.

You can build it with qmail, sendmail, postfix, exim, etc. Any MTA. The degree to which you embed functions in it is important...

- AV scanning
- Spam scanning/tagging
- Valid user checking
- RBL/SDL/SBL blocking
- Tarpitting
- Virtual domain forwarding?

Please indicate your needs/expectation.

I want to use postfix to recieve the mail and determine if it contains a virus and/or if it is spam (clamAV and Spamassassin). Then if it is not spam or if it does not contain an virus I want it to relay the email to the exchange server and go into the mailbox of the person in which the email is address to. I am fairly new to Linux and I am looking for something to show me how to set something like this up.

Check the "Fairly Secure Anti-Spam wiki" at
It does pretty much what you're wanting to do. While the HOWTO is written for FreeBSD, you should be able to make it work with Fedora with little difficulty.

I have something very similar running on RHEL4.2 (CentOS)
