Spaces in names

In my experience i have found spaces in user/hunt names and directory names to be of no problem, but people tell me it can cause all sorts of problems.

What is the general rule?

We always use spaces in user and huntgroups names and we never had problems with it. It seems for some historical reason people in the UK are afraid from spaces.

It's no problem! From the help file....good idea not to have a space at the end though.....

Name:
This is the user's account name, eg. "JohnB" and the one that will be used for RAS Dial In, Caller Display and voicemail mailbox. As the display on Caller Display telephones is normally only 16 digits long it is useful to keep the name short. Only alphanumeric characters and space are supported in this field. Do not use punctuation characters such as #, ?, /, -, _ and ,. This field is case sensitive and must be unique.

No spaces at the end of names is more than a good idea to avoid - avoid it like death itself. When it tries to create a folder on the VMS server with the same name, windows drops the trailing space. Now, you have a user with a mismatched folder name on the VMS server, and the world comes to a screeching halt.

I agree you can have them in the middle as long as you stay away from the diseased and soon to be put to death R2.1(15) build of firmware.

Spaces at the end of names get deleted in VM pro (per the docs). But putting a space at the end of a name is pointless anyway because you'd never see it. I typically don't use spaces if I'm creating some sort of custom start point, just in case it can't handle it, but I don't think its a requirement.

Maybe this is another thing they've quietly changed recently, but it used to cause MAJOR problems to leave spaces at the end of names.

spaces at the end of names are pointless, but sometimes they creep in as a typing error.

this does cause VM to go screwy
