Just wanted to get some input on transparent spacers. I have a table that just would not appear the way I wanted it to so I inserted some transparent images(really small only 1px height and long as I need them it varies.) I tried setting the width of the cells but for some reason it kept getting out of whack.

Does this effect load time very much or is there a better way to do this.

Keep in mind to use the SAME transparent gif everytime only varying the dimensions. As Cian points out it is very common. The first time the transparent image is displayed it's stored in cache. Generally they are very small in size too. Once cached the browser will pull the image from the local computer and not have to download, not causing much more time.
