After deleting mail and emptying trash, space (size) for mailbox did not change. In msmail, there is a compact folders routine that recovers space. Is there something similar for groupwise.

There's a reduce and expire function that does this. You do this in ConsoleOne, and infact you could setup a process to do this automatically on a schedule or certain events.
