I am trying to re-service pack a couple NT4 workstations with sp6a (128-bit) and the system comes back with:

"Service Pack Setup could not determine weather you are running Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server."

I get this on a few NT4 Servers as well. Any clues, pointers, suggestions, or hints on how to correct this or what caused it will be greatly appreciated.

Had this problem on an NT server. Ran a search in the registry for "lanmanNT" and changed it to "WinNT" saved rebooted and successfully installed SP6A.
Remember, make a backup of the registry before making any changes!!!

I searched the registry and did not find any reference to lanmanNT. It must be something else. I also can't run the Usermanager unless I bounce it first then log in and launch it. If I wait a day or so before I launch the Usermanager then I get:

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. Do you want to select another domain to administer?"

I think they ae related somehow and I can't find solutions to either - anywhere.

I've got those problems after I installed SP6a. And then I couldn't install Blasterworm update because of 'Couldn't determine system' -error.
I found that the fix tried to read registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions.
That key was grayed out in REGEDT32.

Now I have 3 NT4 Workstation and one Server machines that have that problem. I would appreciate any help.

I still have not found a solution to this. I do know that if I reboot and log in immediately I can do a Windowsupdate successfully. If I wait too long it won't happen.

I was also suffering from the "Service Pack Setup could not determine whether you are running Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server." error message.

Luckily, after a lot of troubleshooting, I found the cause. The WINNT systems experiencing this problem, were all running Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.61. I stopped the Norton service (control panel -> services), and then re-ran the service pack install.

Victory!!! The service pack installed without issue. I hope this helps you guys out

I have not tried that yet and it does make sense. However, I am no longer employed and will not get the chance to try it out now. I will not forget this though in case I get re-employed and have another chance to put this new knowledge to use.

Thank you….

I also found out that problem is Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.61 related problem. Final solution for me was to update NAVCE client to version 7.61 44b.

After that I haven't had any problems (concerning this matter).

Thanks to all of you
