SP30 softphones not working over VPN

Hello,

My first time post on Tek-Tips here. I have an NEC IPS 2000 with IP softphones that work fine on the local LAN.

I am trying to make these softphones work offsite via VPN. It seems like the DRS registration protocol is failing to communicate with the PBX.

I get one of two error messages depending on how I try to login. Either number already used or number can't be used (err code 02 or 03).

What controls the MAC address to extension binding in the PBX? It seems that once you successfully connect the SP30 client to the PBX on a particular extension it remains mapped. There has to be a command or way to reset this. Hence the number already used message (I am guessing?).

When trying to capture the network traffic from the SP30 client to the PBX, I cannot seem to see any responses back from the PBX either. I thought that the sniffer might shed some light on whether the DRS registration was completing succesfully or not. But the sniffer shows the PBX is not responding. However PING works from the VPN client to the PBX IP address (responses still not shown in the sniffer trace).

So I guess my questions are these:

1. How does the DRS registration process happen for a remote network?

2. Is there any special config for a VPN environment to make and SP30-ACD phone work?

3. How do you setup the username and password for the SP30 login? When entering the extension for a username only, you get the "number already in use" error message. When specifying the extension for the username and password, you get the "number can't be used" error message.

I have played around with the "Terminal identification is generated at the time of registration" checkbox and it doesn't seem to change the outcome.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I worked with an NEC reseller to get the softphones working internally, but they have no advanced networking/VPN experience to offer.

Thank you,

CMD 08>516 should be a 0 to allow overide of an ext that is already logged in. Once this is done when you login with the SP30 it should ask you to override.
Make sure in your routing tables of your network that your VPN addressing scheme is set up to access your PBX addressing scheme. Just because you can PING it doesn't mean that it is set up correctly.
As far as username that should be the ext you are going to use, password depends on how the system is set up, you can have a default password or you set up a unique password for each ext.
