i have vista business, failed to install thru update (1).
ensured services/devices enabled, av disabled, failed 2nd time. tried direct download(3), no better. tried renaming SoftwareDistribution, sfc check for update & download (4/5).

only good thing about this mess is that dell laptop is returned to a working machine.

error messages 800736cc, devices requiring installing,
80360006. event messages included service rpc errors,
wcp/cmiadaptor.

not sure whether its worth another go.

forum searches haven't revealed a definitive set of
instructions to clear the update decks.

it may require a vista install then sp1 upgrade.

i could restore a diskimage prior to 1st update attempt,
but have no confidence sp1 would update.

Lancstech make sure that all your drivers are up to date...

Just out of interest which version of Vista Business are you using, a 64 Bit or x86?

I have not had any trouble implementing SP1 on x86 machines, but there was a 64 Bit that refused to take SP1, either from Windows Updates or as a standalone Service Pack, and even after clean installing Vista. This was a dual boot that had already taken the x86 SP1 on another Partition too? The install attempt gave me every error known to man and never the same one either. The only way I eventually got it installed was when Microsoft released a SP1 slipstreamed version of 64 Bit operating system. Then it went in with no problems as a clean install.

Perhaps you can get the slipstreamed version if you ask Dell or Microsoft.

Almost certainly you are missing one of the prerequisite updates before installing SP1, or you have a driver that needs updating or you have a driver that hasn't got an update available yet and is incompatible with SP1.

This is SP1 protecting you - even though it may seem frustrating, it is better that ending up with a non-functioning computer.

hi bbb, linney

on 1st/2nd attempt, one report said install certain disabled devices eg ricoh sd card. another install intel driver (was an old one!). fairly sure drivers are upto date.

my vista is x86 business, and a slipstreamed sp1 would be useful for a single clean install.

like the irish man when asked for directions, said he wouldn't start from here.

this sort of issue shouldn't arise from an update,
and i wonder what chaos is building up in the general vista population. vista sp1 feels like a sickly xp sp1.

i might give update one more go after an image restore,
if i can establish a baseline of requirements that improves
my chances.

hi tf1, you could be right, but since i regularly got 3 of 3 100% complete, that doesn't say much for vista error reporting.

also i got different error messages, a well designed install
should flush out previous attempts, and since my dell vostro is kept upto date the update process was supposed to warn users of
driver conflicts. there isn't much additional software loaded eg firefox, cclean. i was tempted to uninstall mcafee but settled for temporary disabling.
