Hi,

I am very new to Cognos and i've been told that trasnformer can't source directly from SQL tables. What if I have an access database with table link to the SQL tables through a ODBC connection, can transformer source from it?

The reason is becasue we are being told to use DTS to export the sql table to .xls or .csv but in that way we will have to schedule the DTS job. If we only create the link to the SQL tables in a access database then we don't have to schedule anything which is easier!

Thanks!

Why not build an Impromptu Catalog against your SQL tables. Then you can write reports against the tables, as well as IQD files for Transformer to use to build cubes.

woo... you are quick and thanks!

The problem is we did't purchase Impromptu! We will start our first phase (at least )development of power cube without it since we haven't decided whether we are going with Impromptu or ReportNet!

One thing to think about when deciding between Series 7 and ReportNet. If your users do a lot of ad-hoc reporting against non-productionalized sources (ie MSAccess), ReportNet is not the tool to do this with. Impromptu is much more of a user based ad-hoc tool. ReportNet is an enterprise tool.
