We are using an application for modeling flight simulator visual databases that was compiled for IRIX 3.0.10 . Because of this the computer we are stuck using is an SGI IRIS 3120. We recently had the hard drive controller card fail and have been unsuccessful in locating a replacement board.
We don't have the source for the application but can acquire it. As the application is based on Multi-Gen their licensing portion is $7,000; the visual system manufacturer hasn't stated the cost of their portion yet. Before we spend $10,000+ on the source I would like to get an idea of how difficult it might be recompile the application for a later operating system.
The SGI IRIS 3000 series computers were pre-MIPS machines. SGI Personal IRIS 4D series were the start of the MIPS processors, so I suspect that there may be a huge change in the way programs were written for the new operating systems.
We still run a couple of 4D series computers here, but the bulk of our SGI computers are Indigo2s running IRIX 5.3 . This platform would offer supportability for another decade at least.
So - is there anyone out there who might be able to tell me if this route is worth pursuing?
