the hard drive on my Dell Latitude D520 recently crashed. I am back up and running with a new hard drive (thank god for warranties!), but my pc will not play any sounds. Do I need drivers?

You could reinstall the audio drivers and see if that works. If it doesn't, come back here and some one should be able to help further...
You should be able to find the drivers from Dell's website using the Tag on your pc, the website will instruct you where to find this if you don't already know.
