I m using SOUNDEX SQL SERVER 's function (to generate a string from Database Fields as LastName , FirstName .
The problem is that when i have to deal with Greek characters its returns 0000.
Can you help???
thanks
Soundex was designed for use in generating the "Sound Index" for names in the U.S. It uses ASCII codes, not any international language information. It is a reasonably simple process, but would vary somewhat with different languages (e.g. Greek, French, ... Urdu, Arabic ... ). The two largest items are the 'alphabet' and letter pairs refered to in English as dipthongs. thee latter (dipthongh are two letter 'pairs' which have the sound of one other single letter. One example would be that 'Ph' in 'Philosphy" sounds like a "P".
So, you would need to create or map your alphabet to the ASCII codes, AND check the dipthong pairs in your language vs. the dipthong pairs in english to have the function work properly for you.
There are a lot of 'Soundex' routines available, but if you want to try to do your own and can't get one anywhere else, I think I could still find one, and would be send it to you. Might take me a day or two to retrieve it, as it has been a while and It is probably in 'storage'.
