I tried running sndconfig to configure my soundcard and I get the following error message.

"You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in the module search path).

To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular sound, such as the kernel shipped with Red Hat Linux or a 2.2 or greater kernel."

Here are the modules that are loaded and come up under the command lsmod

Module Size Used by
es1371 27168 0 (autoclean)
soundcore 5156 4 (autoclean) [es1371]
3c59x 22888 1

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem.

Do you get sound as root? If so, open /etc/groups and make sure that all users are listed in the sound or audio group (its exact name differs by distro).
