Sound problem 1

I can't get any sound since I reinstalled my Windows 2000 system, though the connections and speakers are fine. The drivers are all installed and according to the Device Manager working properly, except for the "Microsoft Kernel System Renderer". I can't find any material or drivers on the web for this.

Can anybody advise me what I need to do here please?

After trying the solution in that thread, installing the MS Audio Compression Manager, there is no improvement. MS Kernel System Renderer is still exclamation-marked, and if I try to play a sound file with Media Player, I get the message "no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding". I couldn't download Media Player 10; the download page told me that it's not available for Windows 2000. In any event, my sound had previously been working with version 6.4.

There's quite a lot of information shown, and I don't know what's most relevant, but when I click the Music tab, then the Test DirectMusic button, I get a message that there was no sound driver found.

Do a Google search on "Microsoft Kernel System Renderer"
as I suspect this is a non-standard driver oddly connected to whatever modem you might have installed.

I couldn't find anything meaningful (to me!) in the first few pages returned by Google. I don't use or have a modem; I connect to the Internet via an Ethernet gateway.

The audio hardware is integrated into the motherboard (Asus A7N8X-E), and according to the manual comprises "MCP-T southbridge integrated APU + Realtek ALC650 6-channel audio Codec". The device manager reports the drivers as "NVidia nForce MCP APU" and "Realtek AC97 Audio".

I've gone back over that thread, but unfortunately there's nothing new to report. I've checked the IDE controller suggestion and the HKEY_USERS suggestion, and they're both OK. I've now installed Media Player 9, and the latest Microsoft codec package, but I still get a "hardware problem" message.

Install the driver. There are multiple sources revealed for the driver.

Win2k wants it.

I tried re-installing a local driver, and it found one this time, and now my sound system is back on "track". I can't understand why it gave so much trouble before.
