I have recently had to reinstal my operating system which went fine.

However, since doing it I can not play any sound.

I have a monitor with built in speakers.

If I open windows media player and pick a song I get a message:

"unable to play - No sound device"

I dont know if this is a problem with the sound connection to the speakers in the monitor or a problem with the sound card in the pc box.

Before reinstalling the OS all worked fine.

What is the best way to establish if there is a problem with the sound card or the monitor speakers.

Thanks all for any comments.

dbomrrsm,

I will assume that you did a clean install vs a repair install.

Do you have an onboard sound device or a PCI card for sound?

Install drivers for the sound device that you have.

This should correct the bo sound problem.

Thanks

It was a clean instal.

"Do you have an onboard sound device or a PCI card for sound?" - how do I find this out ?

Install drivers for the sound device that you have. - how do I see the sound devices I have and how best can I get the drivers as I havent got the CD's that the hardware came with.

Many thanks.

Open Device Manager (Settings | Control Panel | System) to see which sound devices you have. When you have the name of the sound card, search the Net for that driver.

There is no sound card showing under Device Manager (Settings | Control Panel | System).

It appears from looking in the tower that the sound card is part of the motherboard - does this mean the motherboard will need replacing ?

Thanks

You'll need to determine the MOBO manufacturer and model. Then got to the manufacturers website and download the chipset drivers. Usually VIA, SIS, Intel, ALi, or NVidia.

If you don't know your MOBO model you can get Belarc Advisor (free) It should identify you MOBO model and chipset. It may even identify your onloard audio even if drivers aren't loaded (look under Multimedia listing after running it).

If you have on-board sound (which is likely to be the case), the sound chip can normally be enabled or disabled from the BIOS menu. Go to the setup when the computer boots and verify if there is anything about a "enable on-board sound".

Thanks all for your comments and time.
