I installed mandrake 9.1 the other day and the first tiem it booted I had sound. The next tiem I rebooted I got an error message in KDE that says
------------------------------------
Sound server informational message

error while initializing the sound driver

device /dev/dsp can't be opened(device or resource busy)

the sound server, will continue using the null output device.

------------------------------------

I have an Via VT8233 onboard audio controller. I have checked the volume level in Aumix and set it to 31 and still nothing I have tried several different settings in the sound system settings in control center. I have also verified the driver that is being used in Mandrake Control Center, and I have tried restarting the sound servie. Nothing works...anybody got any suggestions?

I ran the troubleshooter also, and everything seemed to be fine.

upon further investigation I found out that the sound is being used by pid 5673, not sure what that is though.

I found this out by restarting the alsa service, which failed to restart because it was being used.

how do I stop pid 5673 from hogging my sound?

thanks

hehe one man post...lol I got my sound working...it seems that Samba was the problem. So I stopped samba restartded Alsa and restarted sound and then restarted samba, and now it is working...it was werid it was like it was trying to play 2 songs at once from a CD. However, I still can't play mp3's that are stored on a XP mchine over the network.

thanks
